Crochet Items:

Do you have a passion for Crocheting cute
little outfits, or blankets? Have you thought about adding income by
applying this wonderful craft? Hear it from someone that has done just
that! I was able to interview Sara of
Lavendar
Dreams. She crochets wonderful Baby Afghans, and answered a few
questions for us!
She has answered some questions for us regarding Doulas and how to get
started:

What sparked your interest in crocheting? I have always
liked crocheting, but my interest in it really came alive while I was pregnant
with my last boy. I wanted to learn to crochet him a blanket. I ended up
crocheting him 5 blankets!
What is the earning potential like for those interested in
crocheting? I charge about $30.00 per blanket, but I have seen them go as
high as $50.oo in boutiques. So depending on how much time you have to invest in
crocheting, advertising, etc. you could make a pretty decent salary. Personally,
since I started selling them online 2 months ago, the highest month earnings was
$150. But, I am not really advertising them as much as I do other things for MommieCare.
How long have you been crocheting, and how long did it take
you to learn to crochet? I started when I was pregnant in '99. It didn't
take me very long to learn. I actually only took two classes and then from there
I bought a stitch reference book and have learned various stitches on my own.
Who did you learn to crochet from, and what was this
experience like for you? I learned from a lady who did classes at Beverly's
Fabrics. I lucked out on the first class because I was the only one to show up.
This enabled me to have a one on one lesson from her which really helped me gain
knowledge of the basics. I really enjoyed these classes. Although I only took
two classes, I really learned a lot from her. (she learned from a neighbor
lady).
What is your favorite item to crochet? My all time
favorite thing to crochet is a baby blanket. I just love the gentle colours and
the soft yarn and the fact that I am creating something to help comfort a child
in the night. A baby blanket is usually something that will stay with a child
for a while --- sometimes into adulthood.
How long does it typically take to crochet an item? It
really depends on the item you are crocheting. Some items can be completed
within hours and others will take you months. A typical baby blanket will take
me about 1 week. (especially now that I have kids) Before I had 2 babies, I
could crochet a baby blanket in one day. Booties will take maybe an hour or so,
hats a couple of hours depending on detail, and afghans will probably take you a
couple of weeks. If you are piecing a patchwork granny square blanket, it will
probably take you a bit longer.
What was the best advice given to you? In crocheting
their is one given, YOU WILL make mistakes, you just fix them and start over.
What advice would you give to someone interested in crocheting? Take your time. You will eventually get it. Try and find someone
who is patient and willing to teach you. Be careful though, it is addicting!
