Writer: Freelance
Freelance writing can be a fun and rewarding
experience for individuals with a creative mind and an internal drive. Alice of
InternetBasedMoms.com &
WAHMCopywriter.com has answered some questions for us regarding her business and how to get
started:
Has writing always been a passion for you? When did this
first start?
Absolutely. Honestly, it started in elementary school. I always loved
creative writing and was a well known short story writer at my school. As a
teenager, full of angst, I moved onto poetry and in my adult life, I made a
shift to more practical writing and research. I love to learn about new things
and I love to share that knowledge with people. That's what my writing is all
about now.
Do you remember the first story you wrote? How old were you?
I wrote a story about the snow and how fierce and strong it was...but how
it was nothing to fear. My Dad still has it in his office. I must have been in
grade one or two.
Did you go to college to further hone your writing skills? If so, what school
did you attend and what was that experience like for you?
I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Simon Fraser University (British
Columbia, Canada). This is where I really discovered my love of combining
research and writing.
What is your favorite topic to write about?
I am currently doing a lot of writing on online business topics. I do own
an Internet business resource site, so much of my focus is there. I find it to
be a fascinating area and I love to share my findings with others.
Where would someone go if they wanted to freelance write? I mean, where would
someone go to get articles, stories published or seen?
It really depends on what kind of writing they do and what they hope to get
out of it. One good purchase is the book "Writer's Market" which is published
each year. It contains tons of great sources of paid work.
I think finding your niche is what will truly get you noticed. Focus on a
particular subject area or genre of writing and establish yourself as an expert
writer in that area. If you aren't getting paid right away, you can do some of
your writing for free, in return for the publicity. The more exposure you
receive, the more people will see your work...and if your good, people will be
willing to pay you for your work.
Did you have someone who influenced you the most in your writing?
This is a hard question because I really think the answer is no. Most of my
writing appears on the Internet and we all know there is more than enough
content on the Internet and a lot of it is pretty generic content that everyone
has seen. I strive to keep my content fresh by keeping to my own style and
writing the way I would speak to a person who was in the room with me.
I see that you have a successful internet copywriting business,
WAHMCopywriter.com. What does a copywriter do?
Well, a copywriter can do a number of things. They can write copy for
advertising, websites, brochures... you name it. Personally, I focus my business
on helping others build a better Internet presence. I mainly work on web copy
that includes sales copy and writing for the search engines, article writing and
press release writing. This is where I've brought the most success to my clients
and it's where I enjoy focusing my attention.
How did you get into the copywriting business?
Quite by accident. I was writing copy and articles for my own website and
people were asking me to write for them. I thought, why not? If I can do what I
enjoy doing...writing...and helping others, I can do that.
What was the best advice given to you about writing?
"Prove it!" I remember one university professor who was so brutal when
marking essays. He always caught me whenever I was simply stating an opinion. He
always insisted that I prove what I was saying. Although now I don't write
formal essays, I always keep this in the back of mind. If I want someone to
believe what I'm telling them...I can't simply tell them that it is so. I need
to explain in detail and prove why it is so.
What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in
freelance writing or copywriting?
"Prove yourself!" It takes a little while to establish your reputation as a
good writer. Be prepared to show you are the expert in your chosen field of
writing.
