Keeping Kids Safe
September is Baby Safety month, so I wanted to share with you a few
things that are extremely important, especially if you or someone you know
have infants or children under the age of 5.
Is your car seat properly installed? You need to check your state
requirements for your child's weight and the type of car seat he/she should
be riding in.
Is your fire safety equipment working correctly? Make sure all smoke
alarms are working, fire extinguishers are close, and you have a fire escape
plan in place. Teach your children where to go in case of a fire, and make
sure the smoke alarm is close enough to the bedrooms so your child can hear
it.
Is your baby's crib safe? Are the slats less than 2 3/8 inches apart? Are
there any holes in the mattress? Remove all stuffed animals, and make sure
the crib isn't under a window, especially with mini blinds (make sure the
strings are tied up or cut off on all mini blinds).
Check your children's clothing for loose buttons and cut off any strings.
Also make sure the clothing is fire retardant.
There are 12 common foods that kids can choke on, so don't leave a child
under age 5 alone to eat. These foods are popcorn, hotdogs, chunks of meat,
raisins, ice cubes, chunky peanut butter, nuts, hard candy, grapes, raw
carrots, potato chips and corn chips. Children can also choke on small
objects such as coins, buttons, and Christmas ornament hooks.
Lastly, check your cupboards for toxic household products. It is reported
that each year 1 million children are accidentally poisoned in their homes,
but it isn't just poisoning...just using these products can be harmful. Here
is an important link regarding toxic products.
http://www.unsafehome.com/ Should you decide that you want to rid your
home of harmful products, please email me and let me know, as this is
something that I do. I am a WAHM, dedicated to teaching people how to switch
to safer products.
