1.  On October 29, 2003 Neurosmith Announces Recall of Children’s Plush Toys

Name of product: Pet Me Platypus™

Units: 4,400

Distributor: Neurosmith of Long Beach, Calif.

Hazard: Any of the four plastic button covers can detach, posing a small parts choking hazard to young children.

Description: Pet Me Platypus is a musical plush toy with a green head, yellow beak and legs, and blue body. The toy features four geometric shape buttons: a red heart, yellow star, orange circle, and green square. The recalled units have Model #42080 engraved on the battery box cover and batch numbers FV23, FV24, FV25, FV27, FV28, FV29, or FV30 printed vertically on the right side of the cover.

Sold at: Sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide from August 2003 through October 2003 for about $20.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop children from playing with this toy and contact Neurosmith for a free replacement Pet Me Platypus.

2.  On October 9, 2003 Magic Cabin Announces Recall of Wooden Toy Cars

Name of Product: Sonato Wooden Toy Car

Units: 600

Manufacturer: Magic Cabin Inc., of Dayton, Ohio

Hazard: The wheels on the toy car can come off, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Description: The Sonato Smiling Mini-Car Toy is wood with four solid- colored wheels painted orange, blue, yellow and green. A smiling face is painted on the front. On the top of the toy is a red button that squeaks when pushed. The toy car was sold individually and as a part of the "Wooden Baby Toys Set of 5." The toy car sold separately is item # 828143 and with the set # 828144.

Sold At: Magic Cabin catalogs and Web site from December 2002 through August 2003 for about $10.

Manufactured In: Germany

Remedy: Consumers should take the toy away from small children immediately and return the toy to Magic Cabin - Attention: Returns 3700 Wyse Road, Dayton, OH 45414-2541 for a full refund, including postage.

3.  On September 17, 2003 Simon & Schuster Announces Recall of Children's Books

Name of product: Dora the Explorer Children's Board Book

Units: 26,000

Manufacturer: Simon & Schuster Inc., of New York, N.Y.

Hazard: A plastic replica of a balloon attached to the book can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Description: The heavy-cardboard book has "Whose Birthday Is It?" printed on the cover in yellow letters. Dora the Explorer cartoon characters are pictured on each page. A cutout in the top left corner of book has a small plastic replica of a balloon attached. The yellow and orange balloon is used as a slide to reveal answers to questions in the book.

Sold at: Discount department stores and bookstores nationwide during August 2003 for about $10.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should take these books away from young children immediately and contact Simon & Schuster at the Consumer Contact number indicated below to receive a replacement book.

4.  On September 17, 2003 Apothecary Products Inc. Announces Recall of "Comforts" Pacifiers

Name of product: "Comforts" pacifiers

Units: 154,000

Manufacturer: Apothecary Products Inc., of Burnsville, Minn.

Hazard: These pacifiers fail federal safety tests, come apart, and can pose a choking hazard to infants and small children.

Description: The pacifiers are available in both silicone and latex formulations in the following colors: powder blue, red, purple, and pink. The name "Kroger" appears on the package, along with the words "Pacifiers," "Latex," "Silicone," "0-6 months," or "6-18 months." The model numbers are located on the back of each package and are the last five digits of the UPC code:
35826 35827 35828 35829

Sold at: Many Kroger-owned stores from August 2002 through August 2003 for about $3.50 to $5.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Return the pacifiers to the store where purchased for a full refund.

5.  On September 10, 2003 L.M. Becker & Co. Inc. Announces Recall of Toy Necklaces

Name of product: Toy Necklaces

Units: 1.4 million

Manufacturer: L.M. Becker & Co. Inc., of Kimberly, Wis.

Hazard: The necklace's pendant contains high levels of lead, posing a risk of poisoning to young children.

Description: The necklaces consist of a 10-inch black cord with a 7/8- inch-diameter gray metal pendant. The metal pendant has assorted symbols on one side.

Sold from: Vending machines in malls, discount department and grocery stores nationwide from March 2002 through April 2003 for about 50 cents.

Manufactured in: India

Remedy: Consumers should contact the company for instructions on how to get a refund.

6.  On September 10, 2003 Swimways Corp. Announces Recall of Swim Trainers

Name of product: "Sandy Claws" Swim Trainers

Units: About 3,400

Manufacturer: Swimways Corp., of Virginia Beach, Va.

Hazard: The nylon body strap on the swim trainer can detach or tear from the flotation device and release a child into water, posing a serious drowning hazard to young children.

Description: The recalled "Sandy Claws" Swim Trainer is a red and yellow colored fabric crab with eight stuffed legs and two eyes covering a styrofoam buoyancy float. Black straps are attached to the side seams to fasten around a child. Printed on the underside of the crab float are the words, "Swim Ways" and "CAUTION: This is not a lifesaving device. Do not leave child unattended while in use."

Sold at: Specialty pool and toy stories nationwide and Internet retailers sold the flotation devices from January 2003 through July 2003 for about $12.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the swim trainers immediately and return them to the company for a full refund. Swimways will provide consumers with a self-addressed envelope to return the product.

7.  On September 10, 2003 SunTech Enterprises Inc. Announces Recall Baby Walkers

Name of product: "Sun Kids" and "Happy Baby" Baby Walkers

Units: About 4,100

Manufacturer: SunTech Enterprises Inc., City of Commerce, Calif.

Hazard: The walkers will fit through a standard doorway and are not designed to stop at the edge of a step. Babies using these walkers can be seriously injured or killed if they fall down stairs.

Description: The recalled baby walkers are made with a plastic frame supported by six or eight wheels on the bottom. The walkers are blue, pink or bright green with a padded seat and an activity tray. "SUN KIDS" or "HAPPY BABY" labels appear on some of the walkers.

Sold at: Small retailers and flea markets in Texas and California sold the walkers from November 2002 through April 2003 for between $15 and $25.

Manufactured in: Taiwan

Remedy: Return to the store where purchased or contact the firm to receive a refund.
