April 2003; The Businessman
I received an email from my supervisor when I used to work at the city hospital as a nurse. I do not have that email, but I do remember the safety alert. I do not know if this is a true story, but I feel that it is a significant one to read.
There was a woman named Beth that was shopping. She came out to her car and she noticed that she had a flat tire. Well, she opened her trunk to find a jack and the spare, and right then, a man walked up. He was parked in the space next to her, and he noticed that her tire was flat as well. He appeared to be a professional man, he wore a suit, and carried a briefcase with him.
He asked her if she needed any help, and although she had changed tires in the past, she thought that it might be faster if he did help her. So, she agreed.
He told her to just sit and rest, and he would have it ready in a jiffy. So, she sat on the sidewalk and waited. He removed the jack and spare from her trunk and the tire was fixed in no time. She thanked him, and was about to drive away, when he stopped her.
"I accidently locked my keys in my car! Can you help me? I just live down the road, and I can get a spare key. It will only take about 5 minutes." he said.
Feeling obligated to help him, she almost said yes, but then, decided not to. She told him that she was sorry, but she was already late for an appointment.
As she drove off, Beth felt very guilty. The man had changed her tire, was dressed in a suit, and then she did not even repay him. So, she drove back to the parking lot to offer a ride. When she returned, she could not find him. So she went home.
A few days later, she was going to get her tire fixed, when she opened the trunk, and found the man's briefcase. At first, Beth wondered why it was there, but then thought it must have been from when he reached in to get the tire and jack. She never did get his name, so she opened the briefcase to contact him. When she opened the briefcase, she saw the contents. They were, gloves, a length of rope, and a knife.
Ok, I am sure that you have all figured it out. He staged the whole thing. He flattened her tire, and planned on hurting her. Although many people would think that it is common sense to not allow a stranger in their car, many of us would have felt obligated to help him out. I wish that we could all be giving, and loyal, but everyone, please be careful too!
